This cottage shows two additions which are on each end of the building. These additions were to accomodate a year round worker's family. The door was moved down to where the original window was. The cottages initially were covered with tar paper not cedar shakes.

Before Restoration

Initially this building was home to four families. Each apartment had an exterior door and a downstairs and upstairs room. A center chimney accommodated 4 wood burning stoves that heated each of the worker's quarters.

Village of Rome Cookhouse and Barracks at Whitesbog

1930s Era ---- Gone!

The barracks style buildings had a center hall with five rooms on the right and left both downstairs and upstairs. Each room had a small window and several built in bunks. The building was heated with a single wood burning stove.

The small building on the right contained a stove for cooking on rainy days when cranberries were not picked in the bogs. Normally dinner was cooked over camp fires. There were three cookhouses and six barrack style buildings in the Village of Rome.

Two Seasonal Worker's Cottages on West Whitesbog Road Next to the Triangle Field

Two Worker's Cottages in the foreground have not been restored.

The Whitesbog Schoolhouse in the background has been restored.

Worker's staying in the Village of Florence at Whitesbog

This building had eight housing units, each with a room downstairs and one upstairs reached by a narrow and steep stairway. Each unit had a wood burning stove for heat.

The interpretive worker's cottage is next to the barrel factory at Whitesbog.

November 27, 2011

A Ford Model T Truck travels North Whitesbog Road

with barrels of cranberries from the cranberry warehouse and is headed to market. Upton Station just down the road provided access to box cars to ship these berries throughout the United States.

The Cranberry Substation's second use was a home for a Whitesbog worker

This unit is being restored to a later configuration. The door leading to the kitchen is where the original window was. The left part of the building is an addition that was used as a bedroom for the year round employee.

The original cottage was composed of a window on each side of the door, a window on each end and three in the back. The third window on the right marks the one room addition that was built to accommodate a year round full time worker's family.

Picking Blueberries in the Triangle Field at Whitesbog -----

Vintage 1923

The birthplace of the domesticated Blueberry is currently being restored by the Whitesbog Preservation Trust. When the restoration is complete Blueberry Festival visitors will be able to pick berries from heirloom highbush blueberries growing in the Triangle Field.
